KEXBY residents are campaigning for a speed limit along the village's stretch of the A1079.
The group want a 40mph restriction imposed and say that Kexby is the only settlement running on both sides of the A road that does not have any special measures.
Jill Edwards and Jess Black have collected more than 100 signatures on a petition backing their argument which has been sent to City of York Council which is responsible for the section of the A1079 between Kexby bridge and the city.
Jill Edwards, Kexby resident, said: “We are the only place on the A1079 not to have one [a speed limit].
“There are a lot of accidents here that aren’t reported, near misses, things like that.
“There’s not been any fatalities recently but it’s just an accident waiting to happen.
”It’s horrendous. Now we’ve got the care home we’ve got elderly people to think about. They have to cross the road to get to the post box.
Other villages in the area that straddle the A1079 have speed restrictions. At Shiptonthorpe, traffic is slowed to 30mph and there is a 40mph limit through Hayton.
There is a 50mph zone on the stretch of the A1079 between Sutton Lane End and Barmby Moor Industrial Estate and a section of the road that bypasses Dunnington carries a 40mph limit.
Jess Black said: “It is terrible getting in and out. Kexby should be the same as all the other villages.”
The Action Access A1079 group also backs the campaign.
Grahame Hicks, chairman, said: “The A1079 group already recognises that the A1079 is not fit for purpose as the main road between Hull and York - and this is just more evidence of that.
“Frankly, we have 30mph through Shiptonthorpe and Bishop Burton and 40mph through Hayton and Dunnington so I think that Kexby has a very good case – especially with the residential home there now.”
A spokesman for City of York council said the petition would be looked at in due course.
She said: “We have received the petition. It will be considered by the council’s engineering team and transport planning unit.”
