POCKLINGTON Rainbows need a new leader.
The group joined in the national celebrations to mark the organisation’s 21st birthday but the future of the group looks bleak.

Pocklington has three Brownie units, two Guide units and a Ranger group plus the Rainbows. Rainbows are aged five to seven and are the youngest members of Girlguiding UK. A leader is needed to keep the Pocklington unit open.

The current leader, Sylvia Wagner-Bottomer, is taking a break from Guiding after four years with the unit when her daughter moves up to Brownies in September.

The group has a unit helper and some mothers help on a rota basis but someone is needed to lead the team.

Bronia Trynka-Watson, district commissioner, said: “Rainbows have fun! They take part in games and activities as part of their programme, which is called the Rainbow Jigsaw.

“Everything a Rainbow does helps her to develop and to think for herself, in a safe girl-only environment. Leaders have fun too. Support and training is available and leaders from all the units help each other.”

One in seven of all six-year-old girls in the UK is a Rainbow and there are more than 6,500 units in the UK.

To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the organisation the Pocklington unit joined other East Yorkshire Rainbows for a day in Beverley.

They also presented sunflowers they have been growing to members of the Pocklington community.

If you would like to help with Rainbows, or volunteer for another age group, contact Bronia Trynka-Watson, district commissioner, on (01759) 304737.
