A TOUR of the region to follow in the footsteps of an entertainer from 80 years ago helped raise more than £4,500 for local causes.

Gil Richardson took part in a 400-mile bike ride to pull in the pounds for the York and North Yorkshire Community Foundation.

The 52-year-old wanted follow in the footsteps of puppeteer Walter Wilkinson, who toured the area in 1931 with his ente
rtainment show.

To support last year's tour, a number of groups who had been given financial help by the foundation in Stamford Bridge, organised fundraisers.

Gil, with the support of her friend Philip Spellacy, stopped at the fundraising events on her 400-mile journey.

Wendy Bundy, chairman of the board of the trustees of the foundation, said: "This was a marvellous initiative which, as well as raising funds, also drew attention to our important work within the county.

"It is a comment on the great community spirit which is alive and well in Yorkshire, that so many individuals and groups gave so much time and energy to create events and help our cause. "They also had great fun in the process!"

York and North Yorkshire Community Foundation is an independent charity that awards grants to worthwhile local causes.

Since launching in September 2001, it has distributed hundreds of grants with a value of over £3,000,000.
