GLIDER pilots are reaching for the skies by planning a UK record attempt to fly hundreds of people in a single day.
The Wolds Gliding Club in Pocklington aims to send up more than 300 people in an ambitious dawn till dusk airborne marathon.

The event has been planned on the weekend of the summer solstice- the longest day of the year- to give the club's pilots m
ore time to fly passengers during daylight hours.

They now want people to experience the thrill of gliding by stepping forward and take part in the challenge.

Chief flying instructor at the club, Tim Milner, said: "We want to fly people from 4am up until 10pm, and have somebody in the air at all times and have all our glider pilots devoted to it.

"Anyone can turn up regardless of experience and fly on that day.
"The last time we did it we had 300 people in one day – that was back in 1991 and it was so exhausting we needed a few years to recover!
"We're hoping we can get enough people but it's difficult to imagine how many we will actually get.

"We've already had people say they will be here at 4am which is usually the difficult time to get anybody!.

"For gliding clubs in the UK it would be the most number of people flown in one day – that's if we can get more than 300 people.
"People can just turn up on the day and enjoy the fun."

Anyone wishing to take part should head to the airfield anytime during the daylight hours of Saturday, 20 June.

Although no experience is necessary, people must be no taller than six foot three inches and weigh under 242lbs.

Flights cost £20 per person and gliders will be launched using the winch. The gliders will be pulled into the air to about 1000 feet and flights will last about five minutes.
