THE MOTHER of a teenage girl who died in a car crash says a memorial garden built in her honour is a fitting tribute.
Ann Maltby is overjoyed with the completed area in memory of her 18-year-old daughter Lindsay, who was one of two girls killed in the accident near Warter last year.
Built at Jubilee Park in Fangfoss and a few minutes walk from the family home on St Martin's Close, the garden is filled with cherry trees, shrubs, flowers and a bench engraved with a plaque made by Lindsay's brother Phil.
It reads 'This area is in loving memory of Lindsay Coulter-Maltby, 1990-2008'.
Mrs Maltby said it allows her and the family to feel close to Lindsay. She hopes others will appreciate the small area and will make use of it.
"Its nice to sit on the bench and talk to her. It's a really quiet and peaceful place," she said.
"Lindsay used to come down here and help plant trees so it's fitting to have it here.
"A few people have seen it and made and said how nice it is. I keep popping down here to say hello to her."
The money for the garden was raised by staff at Costcutters where Lindsay had worked part time. They started a collection following the tragedy in August last year, and raised make £320.
Lindsay died with 20-year-old Amy Hardy from Barmby Moor after Lindsay's Vauxhall Corsa overturned into a field. Aidan Marshall, 18, of Pocklington, was behind the wheel and driving at speeds up to 80mph on narrow country lanes despite not having a licence.
He lost control on the B1246 between Warter and North Dalton and the car smashed through a fence.
Marshall and two other passengers received non life-threatening injuries.
Marshall was sentenced to five years' jail after admitting two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
Meanwhile, next week will prove a poignant moment for Lindsay's family with what would have been her 19th birthday. To mark the occasion, they are inviting her friends and former colleagues to join them at the Carpenter's Arms in Fangfoss.
Mrs Maltby said: "We just want to wish Lindsay a happy birthday and thought it would be nice if her friends could come along and have a drink." They are meeting at the pub on Wednesday, 10 June, between 7pm and 7.30pm.
