Fears for families in new tax

PLANS to raise taxes on family cars will make it even harder to cope with the soaring cost of living for the working family, warns local MP Greg Knight.
There are plans to change the way Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) is calculated as well as an added showroom tax for new cars.

For an average size family car, the annual tax could rise from £200 to £300 per year.

With any car bought after 2001 being hit by higher rates, Mr Knight believes it will lead to a plummeting sale price for second-hand cars, making it more difficult for people to replace their car and upgrade to a new or better one.

The Pocklington and Market Weighton representative said: “At a time when families are feeling the pinch of the rising cost of living due to high fuel prices, energy bills and council tax, the plans for the increase in road tax on family cars should be axed.”
