CLAIMS that more could be done to boost profits at Pocklington Arts Centre have been defended by local leaders.
The issue was raised by a member of the public during the public meeting organised by the council, saying there should be a greater effort to bring people in.

He questioned the viability of some of the cinema nights, with a number of screenings dr
awing in no more than a dozen people.

But arts centre manager Janet Farmer said that while live entertainment continues to thrive, she accepts that the takings from the cinema can vary but it still forms a major part of the venue.

"The cinema is our bread and butter," she said.

"There may be just a few in some nights but other nights it's completely packed out.

"It's all dependent on the film that's showing and the hype that's surrounding it.

"Our remit is to break even and we do that every year, and we're still left with some in reserve."

This was supported by Pocklington's deputy mayor Jeff Shepherd who said: "The town council have always said that the arts centre should pay for itself, which it does.

"As far as I'm concerned it's doing really well and everybody involved should be praised for the job they are doing."
