Following a visit from Kester the hearing dog, the 3rd Pocklington Guides have held a sponsored silence and raised a magnificent £315.40 for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

The total will rise further when Gift Aid is added by the charity. This is enough to provide food for a dog for a year and purchase a puppy starter pack

Leader Anne Thomson said: “The Guides and leaders were fantastic and were completely silent for an hour and even continued when the time was up. We watched a short film about Hearing Dogs, learnt the alphabet in British Sign Language and also learnt to sign the Guide promise.

“We played games that relied on lip reading and mime as well as adapting some more familiar games.

“The evening was great fun but also made us more aware of some of the difficulties faced by deaf people. As part of our ongoing community action 3rd Pocklington Guides are collecting used stamps and old mobile phones for Hearing Dogs.

“Guiding is thriving in the Pocklington area and we have Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and Trefoil Guild.

“We would welcome volunteers interested in helping or leading to allow us to offer the Guiding experience to even more girls.”
