COUNCILLOR Marian Frith has been elected town mayor of Market Weighton for a third successive year.
Coun Malcolm Lindley was elected deputy mayor.

Coun Frith took over from Stephen King who had served as mayor of the town for 17 years. Mr King is still a town councillor.

Councillor Lindley joined the town council in 2007 and replaces Dee Sharpe as deputy mayor.

In the past council year three new town council committees were set up – the town enhancement committee, the emergency plan working party and the Yorkshire Day committee.

The first Yorkshire Day celebration is planned for Saturday 1 August on The Green from noon to 4pm.

Over the past twelve months the council gave £2,190 in small grants to local community groups which included Boys Brigade, Croft Pre-School, Homestart, Living Springs Ministries, Londesborough Park Cricket Club, Vixen 101, MENCAP, Market Weighton Scouts, Riding for the Disabled, Royal British legion, Sue Ryder Care and Vitalise.

Larger grants were given to Vixen 101 and the local Citizen's Advice Bureau and the town council supported Giant Bradley Day last May and the Christmas Lights in December.

The Market Weighton In Bloom committee disbanded this year and donated the 29 planters to the town council. Council members thanked the volunteers for their efforts over the years and asked people to get in touch is they wanted to form a new group.
