TEENAGERS are being taken off the streets in Market Weighton on an evening thanks to a new youth club.
The drop-in centre above Netto supermarket in the town centre was officially opened last month and up to 60 youngsters a night are pouring through the doors.
More than 93 have registered their names at the first-floor centre, which offers them a chance to play games, watch TV or chat with friends
Named the Life Centre, it is run by local church group Living Springs Ministries.
It has been welcomed by many in the town who feel teenagers now have a supervised place to hang out. It is open every night of the week thanks to volunteers and is making a big impact, according to Dr Alex Appiah, pastor at the newly-formed church.
"It's going really well," he said. "Everyday we've got kids taking it up.
"We are just so pleased because this building has been empty for about a year-and-a-half and there's no other facility like this in Market Weighton. It's very central.
"There's very little for children in Market Weighton to do, you see them hanging around on street corners.
"We're now trying to encourage youth leadership, so they can organise activities themselves.
"We also need more volunteers because we running at capacity at the moment."
The group has taken out a one-year lease on the property with plans to re-negotiate later this year. In the meantime they are searching for long-term funding.
Support for the centre has been gathering from local businesses, East Riding Council and residents.
Market Weighton Town Council and Market Weighton School have offered their support.
Town councillor, Malcolm Lindley, was on hand to officially open the centre. He said: "It is a wonderful facility with plenty of scope for increasing the range of activities available."
