STUDENTS from The Market Weighton School have triumphed at one of the Humber region's most prestigious business competitions for young people.
The Young Enterprise Company Programme held its annual celebration and awards evening in Scunthorpe to reward the success of young people aged between 15 and 19 after they had been given the opportunity to set up and run a real company for a year.
The young people involved elect a board of directors, raise share capital, implement a business plan, market and sell their product or service.
At the end of the Young Enterprise year, companies are liquidated and a set of accounts prepared for shareholders, who may be lucky enough to receive a dividend on their investment.
Market Weighton's team, Kubbitz, were chosen as one of nine finalists from 46 registered companies for their efforts, and went on to take the title of 2009 Humber Company of the Year.
Using natural resources, they produced and sold Kubb, a family lawn game originally invented by the Vikings and similar to modern-day skittles.
The whole game and its packaging was produced in the DT workshop at the school by the students in the company.
Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE who presented the team's award at the event, said: "I am really delighted for Kubbitz and Market Weighton School.
"As always, the standards of all the finalists was extremely high so for the students from Market Weighton to come through as overall winners is a real achievement, taking a lot of hard work from their team."
Phil Tibbetts, head teacher at Market Weighton School, said: "The young people who represented The Market Weighton School are a dynamic and supremely enthusiastic group.
"They made me extremely proud and are a shining example of what young people from a small school can achieve.
"These youngsters are already winners and tomorrow's entrepreneurs and high achievers."
The company is looking forward to competing in the regional final where they hope to win a place at the UK Innovation Awards, to be held in London during July.
