Next week marks a year since Pocklington Arts Centre installed its state-of-the-art digital cinema, which staff say has been a great success.

The cinema’s recent showing of Les Miserables attracted over 1,600 people during its run at the venue and other box office successes such as Skyfall and Life of Pi, have also brought in large numbers of cinema goers.

It is not just films which seem to be bringing larger audiences to the centre, the venue’s live broadcasts from the National Theatre have also played a mojor role.

The forthcoming live broadcast of Alan Bennett’s new play, which sold out weeks in advance, illustrates the appeal of such performances.

James Duffy, assistant manager at the Arts Centre, said: “We converted from 35mm film to digital this time last year, partly because fewer films are being made in 35mm.

“If we were to survive as a cinema it was a question of when, not if, we would change to digital, and it has enabled us to do the live broadcasts for the first time.

“Digital cinema brings better quality sound and vision and you can really tell the difference.

“The live broadcasts mean people are saved from going on an expensive trip to London or Moscow to watch a show, which is fantastic for audiences.

“The conversion to digital cinema would not have been possible without the financial support of Pocklington Town Council and the friends of Pocklington Arts
Centre.”
