Art and fun for charities

Bugthorpe artists open their studios on 30 June to showcase an array local art, ceramics and classical sculpture – continuing a tradition started by artist and ceramic studio owner Val Bates.

Val’s daughter Melissa said: “She was an inspirational lady not only in her artistic skills but also in her drive to think of new events, using the studio and its resources, to raise money for charities. The main one was the local church (which is currently endangered and may have to close), St Andrew’s and more recently, since suffering cancer herself, the Yorkshire Cancer Centre in Leeds.

“She sadly lost her battle with the disease in August last year.’

“Its hard to believe this time last year we were organising the same event together. She had survived a major operation and was, we thought, slowly on the mend.

“She was bashing signs into the verge with a mallet just weeks before she started to go downhill. She ended up back in hospital just days after last years event.”

This year’s event will feature a tombola, face-painting stalls, a tribute exhibition of Val’s art and ceramics, a bouncy castle, demonstrations, exhibitions by artists Maurice Tooby, Ruth Coulson and Robert Crow and sculptor Andrian Melka, cakes and refreshments. It will raise money for the cancer centre and St Andrew’s Church. To donate a tombola prize, please contact Melissa on 377368 or it can be left at Make n Take Ceramics.
