I would like to clarify a few points in reply to Mrs Parkinson's letter about the Shiptonthorpe Village Hall.
I have been a resident of Shiptonthorpe for more than 40 years. There are people who went to school here, and there are new people who have moved into the village, many of whom regard the village hall as part of our history and most certainly don't s
ee it as an eyesore (even though it is not a listed building).

The group of helpers, many of whom are not on the committee, did much more than basic maintenance work.

1) I heard someone at Easter asking a committee member when they would be able to use the village hall again, as they had been told they shouldn't use it as the electrics were dangerous and there was a problem with insurance, so they made less satisfactory arrangements for their function elsewhere.

It is my understanding that the parish council agreed to take responsibility for the electrics last summer and any maintenance required has been done. I am sure if it had been dangerous, this work would have been undertaken immediately or the village hall would have been temporarily closed.

2) I and many other residents could think of nothing worse that clearing the site and developing it. That would be an eyesore. Apart from this, many people know the services in Shiptonthorpe cannot sustain further development and this was confirmed to a neighbour and myself only last week by the parish clerk during a meeting we were having with NEDL regarding a problem to do with the flooding of the beck.

3) As well as the fortnightly whist drive, the village hall is also used for parish council meetings and the flood meetings and other occasional functions. If there is enough interest I understand one resident is hoping to hold line dancing classes on Thursday afternoons. These are all uses of the hall in its "present state".

4) I am sure that East Riding Ward councillors have enough on their plate dealing with the flooding and sewage problems in Shiptonthorpe which concern everyone living in the village, than to be worrying about the minority who want to see the demise of the village hall, or at least I hope they have.

I am not a member of the current village hall management committee but I would like to thank them on behalf of every resident in Shiptonthorpe who feels the same as I do about saving our village hall.

Your efforts are very much appreciated by many people.

Mrs J Miller
