I have been following the letters to Postbag and The Post regarding traffic problems through Barmby Moor, issues about the dangers of the A1079 and access to the industrial estate via a potential new development off Hodsow Lane.
I believe both residents and councillors, in both Pocklington and Barmby Moor, are missing a fantastic opportunity to resolve all of these issues.
As a resident of Barmby Moor I have been aware of the increasing amount of commuter traffic blightin
g our village, spoiling its tranquillity and endangering our children.
Our councillors are striving to curb this trend, suggesting closing roads, putting up new signs and contemplating other traffic calming measures, which I accept need to be considered.
The point is that I feel that this is not Barmby Moor's problem and that we should not have to close off these so-called rat runs and pay for calming measures because of Pocklington commuters. The problem instead lies with the size of Pocklington and its residents' inability to safely access the A1079.
Pocklington has grown over recent years but no infrastructure has been put in place to allow easy access to the A1079.
I understood that with the new development proposed on the industrial estate the developers (although I feel this should be the Local Government) would be obliged to pay for the construction of a new roundabout.
A roundabout situated at the end of Hodsow lane at its joining the A1079 would solve a multitude of problems.
It would slow down the traffic along the A1079, allow Pocklington residents to safely and easily access the York to Hull road, permit direct access to the industrial estate for local and non-local traffic and prevent the need to travel through every thoroughfare in Barmby Moor.
Examples of roundabouts that work well are at Shiptonthorpe and at Market Weighton.
The speed limit could even be made a 50mph limit from this point to Hewson and Robinson and with forward thinking even the Allerthorpe turning could be incorporated into a new roundabout.
It is time for residents and councillors of both communities to petition local government and sort out this A1079 problem once and for all.
