Bradley boost for town causes

A FESTIVAL of gigantic proportions paid off again this year with the cash being ploughed back into the town.
The Giant Bradley celebrations in Market Weighton were held at the town’s football club for the second year running at the start of the summer and, despite weather issues, were still able to clear more than £2,580 after costs.
The outgoing chairman, Derek Carey, said:” Even though the weather was poor we still managed to attract thousands of people and we must also thank all our sponsors who stuck by us in these difficult economic times.”
The cash was handed over to the local groups at a presentation evening at Bradley’s Cafe last week, and included £840 going towards Market Weighton Football Club, £840 for Vixen Radio, £450 for St John’s Methodist Church and £450 for the Scout and Guide HQ fund.
Mr Carey added: ”It is really fabulous that all the efforts of the committee and our sponsors has allowed us to give over £2,500 to local charities and good causes. We sincerely hope to do even better next year!”
The committee are already planning for next year’s event, and are hoping to get together with all other interested parties in Market Weighton to put on a special event to commemorate The Queen’s Jubilee in June.
An inaugural meeting is to be held at The Market Weighton Community Centre next Thursday, 13 October at 7.30pm.
The committee would welcome any local organisation who would like to get involved to go along to the meeting.
Current chairman Andy Swalwell: ”We want to take the opportunity of The Queen’s Jubilee to put on a one-day festival for Market Weighton.
“However, we cannot do this ourselves and we will need the support of the town council and many other local organisations to make this happen.
“This first meeting is a real opportunity to take on board ideas and get the whole process started. I would appeal to everyone to come along and get involved.”
