POCKLINGTON District Lions Club has kicked off its Golden Anniversary year by donating £5,000 to sponsor a puppy for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Spangle the golden labrador visited the club at its last meeting at Pocklington Arts Centre, where two new members Eunice Bentley David Whittaker were inducted into the club.

This is a big year for the Lions as they celebrate the 50th year of the club serving both the local and international community.

Guide Dogs for the Blind is also celebrating a special year - its 80th - and Lions Club president Graham Gillyon said he was delighted that the club could sponsor a puppy for the charity.

He thanked all Lions supporters for making the donation possible.

The money will be put towards specialist training for Spangle so that, as he grows, he will become an invaluable companion for a person suffering from sight loss.

Pocklington District Lions Club is going from strength to strength and, from April, the club will be meeting at a new larger venue, the Yorkway Motel, to accommodate its increase in members.

Its first meeting at the Yorkway will take place on Tuesday 10 April due to the Monday falling on the Easter Bank Holiday, but from thereafter meetings will be held as usual on the second Monday of every month.
